Ocular Allergies - and what you can do about them!
Allergic eye symptoms, which tend to go hand in hand with nasal symptoms, affect between 20-25% of the population, this percentage being higher in children.
The classic allergic symptoms are “itchy” watery eyes, increased redness of the white part of the eye and eyelid swelling. Patients with allergies may be bothered mainly in Spring and Fall or all year round.
Eye drops can be helpful in “rinsing” out the allergen and alleviating the itch. These drops may be over the counter (OTC) or prescription. Removing the allergen, cool compresses, closing windows, reducing the speed or shutting off ceiling fans, using HEPA filters and using anti-allergen pillowcases are also helpful during peak allergy season.
